Waltz in C Major

Description

Set to a contageous waltzy tune, Waltz in C Major takes inspiration from Where's Wally books and challenges players to spot and track the unique dancer amongst confoundingly similar fellow dancers. This mobile game starts simple but soon gets frenetic as the ballroom gets more visitors as the night goes on. Soon, there will be over 20 dancers vying for attention, and it is up to the player to deduce who stands out from the rest.
This game was created by a team of students within a period of 20 hours as part of a mobile game game jam. At the time, I was an avid player of Lumosity's mini games, and together with my background in psychology, I knew visual search would serve as an effective premise for a 20 hour game jam. Visual search is a perceptual task that involves locating a specific object amongst a pi of confounds. The difficulty of the task is dependent on the degree of similarity the object has with its surroundings. This was one main way I chose to control the difficulty of Waltz in C Major. Amongst colour, shape and pattern, the number of unique attributes that the unique dancer possesses decreases as the game goes on, making it harder to identify. The concept itself came about after I composed the music for the visual search game. I recorded a simple and catchy waltz tune (in C major) that in the end served as the conceptual foundation of the game. All these different elements came together to make what I believe to be a small but polished and intelligent game.
