This Reena, This Day

Description

This Reena, This Day is an experiment in dialogue writing, and both divergent and convergent storytelling. Set to the soundscape of a cafe in Melbourne, the game revolves around a conversation had between childhood friends. Players can expect to have to choose between two ways to respond to any given situation, affecting the flow of the conversation and their interpretation of the relationship of the characters. The main inspirations for this game were the dialogue-heavy Until Dawn and The Walking Dead, which use similar mechanics but in a much more garnished fashion.
This Reena, This Day was a solo Twine project. I used the degree of liberty provided by this purely dialogue driven game to explore themes of friendship, adulthood and faith, and what resulted was easily my most personal piece at the time of its completion. Although the nature of having to converge and diverge the heavily intertwined branches of the story made some moments awkward to write, and perhaps read, I am content with the extent to which I kept the flow of logic no matter which way the story went. I hope to engage in more projects like this to hone my skills in scriptwriting.
