The Swarm

Description

The Swarm is the music to my game Madu Maths, and this is the score of a version to be played on the piano. Back when I composed and recorded the piece during the game's phase as an academic project, I wanted to create a simple tune that I would be able to manage with my limited amount of time and experience. I sat by the piano at the Academy of Interactive Entertainment wondering how I wanted the song to sound. I aimed for something light, animated and reflective of honeybees gathering honey for their hive. I immediately went to Rinsky-Korsakov's Flight of the Bumblebee as the most straightforward source of inspiration and I decided to start with an oscillating rhythmic C-C-D-D-E-E-D-D in my left. With my right I added an almost canonical voice on the half beat in the subdominant that gradually deviated from the leader in the style of Debussy's The Snow Is Dancing to add a bit of that frenetic buzzing texture. From there the melody grew on its own. I added a few jazzy elements in the bridge, made sure it looped around seamlessly and voila! The Swarm was born. It was an exciting first effort into game music composition for me and I hope to be able to create more complex and interesting pieces for my upcoming games.
