Defect

Description

Defect is a spaceship-building and space shooter game released by Three Phase Interactive in July of 2016. The player assumes the role of captain to self-designed ships and uses them to complete missions. They must battle through all that space throws at them, from laser-firing armoured behemoths to armies of speedy hummingbird ships, and all while dealing with mutiny-prone crew members. Its 2D controls pay homage to Atari's Asteroids, and serves as the foundation to ceaseless combat with space pirates.
Defect was the winner of Outstanding Excellence at Unite Melbourne and a nominee for Innovation at the AGDAs. I was privileged to be an intern at Three Phase Interactive as they developed this game. After a stint of QA testing, I was tasked with level designing and was humbled to have my first mark on a released game with such a profile and such success. One level I was in charge of, titled Mind the Gap, was to be engineered to be particularly tricky, and I am glad to have employed the unconventional use of puzzle making in such a genre. This experience has made me better prepared than ever to take on the games industry with my idiosyncratic merits.
