Collecting My Thought on Song of the Deep—Unforgettable is a Stretch

I associate Song of the Deep with a bit of disappointment. The story about a girl that builds a makeshift submarine to rescue her father lost at sea, despite boasting a fresh and promising premise, falls far short of their word "unforgettable" (though a marked improvement from the original Spyro I recently had a chance to revisit and finish for the first time) and many of the mechanics feel tacked on or just plain same-old and do not add much in conveying its story. This game did not need to go down the route of combat or trading.
Saying that, its strong points come in the form of a felicitous Irish brogue, solid writing, impressive scale and intricacy, even more impressive pace, and enjoyable exploration. Exploration is the true heart of the game that should be focused on more. It is complemented well by the music (another improvement from Spyro) and visuals that cleverly play with layers and depth to allow many opportunities for hidden treasure within the picturesque environments.
A decent effort by Insomniac games and the source of the game's inspiration is endearing. Good to see a company of its standing try something a little different (though ultimately not different enough) and do it all through Unity. And though I do love me some Unity (Madu Maths made in Unity is out now on PC and Mac!), let's just say some of the game's bugs I find absolutely forgivable.
