As usual Naughty Dog has once again proven themselves to me as heavyweight storytellers in the industry. They have been doing this since my love for video games was revived on the day I played through Uncharted 2 on a borrowed PS3 years after its release. From dread to awe to good old-fashioned adventure, the array of sensations I experienced through its devices was what set me off on my journey.
Though this latest entry in the series did not leave quite the same profound impression, it still reaffirmed the idea that dialogue between two characters in a video game can be well scripted and delivered (I'm looking at you Arkham Knight). Good old-fashioned adventure, sadly, did not play quite as impactful of a role this time. Instead, and coincidentally for me, themes of revival and catching up were most pertinent in the game with Sam and Nathan's temporally corrupted big-brother-little-brother relationship taking the front seat. Flashbacks of their past were the highlight of the game, and new characters keep the whole affair just fresh enough.
In the grand scheme of things Uncharted 4 is just another good piece of work. But in the realm of video games, the comparisons are night and day. The craft of storytelling is just too often designated as an afterthought when I believe it should always be put at the forefront. I hope for Naughty Dog to stay the trailblazers they are, and for myself to rise up to such standards one day and maybe even surpass them.
#PlayTime 48 hours.
#FavouriteScene Elena's TV game thing.
#FavouriteHair It's like splitting well-kept healthy-feeling hairs between Nadine and Rafe.
#SequelNeeded Absolutely no need to sequelise A THIEF'S END (or The Last of Us for that matter smh).
